Answering a few questions about independent and assisted living
After 50 years of being there for some of the toughest times that many families have had to endure, here are the questions we’re asked the most. And, we’d imagine you have a few more of your own, so we’re looking forward to speaking or meeting with you - when the time is right for you.
What is meant by “continuing care?”
Continuing care refers to the various levels of supportive services provided within our community to meet our resident’s needs – throughout Independent Living and Assisted Living.
What is the benefit of living in a continuing care retirement community like Prairie Homestead Senior Living?
You know us …. Prairie Homestead Senior Living offers nearly 50 years of experience in senior living. Each day Prairie Homestead strives and meets the commitments we have made to our residents. The life style is an active one if you so choose, or can be more laid back, if this is what you desire. Every day is filled with conveniences and opportunities for warm and interesting social interactions. There is a special connection that comes from living at a not for profit, faith- based community, along with a sense of belonging and being a part of an extended family.
Still, many residents believe the most important aspect of living at Prairie Homestead Senior Living is having a secure plan for the future. Prairie Homestead Senior Living residents and their family members have planned for the future knowing that as changes come about, you have the freedom to hire services into your independent living residence or transition to the assisted living, where more services can be secured to ensure the aging in place concept.

How young can I be to apply for residency?
The minimum age for residency is 62 years. In the case of a couple, only one needs to be 62.
How do I know if I can afford to live at Prairie Homestead?
We would love to discuss this with you in person as it can get complicated. Our Marketing Director would be glad to help you find a service that fits in to your budget. Our prices do vary but start at $1352/month plus a community fee. If you have questions about resources that could help, please contact us.
Who owns Prairie Homestead Senior Living?
Wichita based American Baptist Estates, Inc., doing business as; Prairie Homestead Senior Living is who we are. We are a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation responsible for providing services to the residents of Prairie Homestead Senior Living.
Who runs Prairie Homestead Senior Living?
Under the management of Grace Team Services and direction of Brenda Janda, our leadership team is responsible for day-to-day operations. The American Baptist Estate, Inc Board of Directors, which is comprised of up to 12 volunteer members, works directly with Grace Team and Brenda and is focused on enhancing the strength of the entire organization, ensuring fulfillment of its mission and recognizing its full potential for providing services to seniors. Our Board of Directors are local people who know and understand Prairie Homestead’s history. They too, have loved ones who live or have lived with us.
Do I have to be a Baptist to live at Prairie Homestead?
Not at all. While Prairie Homestead’s beginning and life is very much a part of the American Baptist tradition, our community welcomes and accepts residents of all faiths.
Does Prairie Homestead allow pets?
Independent Living residents may have an indoor pet such as a dog or indoor cat, 25 lbs. or less upon approval by the Administrator. When pets are outdoors, they must be kept on a leash at all times and the owners must clean up after them. All local pet laws must be observed. Pets do not reside in Assisted Living; however, we welcome family and friends to bring their pets to visit.
Does Medicare pay for independent living or assisted living?
Independent and assisted living communities do not fall under the Medicare guidelines for payment of services. The cost is paid by the individual(s).
How Many Prairie Homestead Senior Living Communities Are There?
Just Us! No other Prairie Homesteads exist. Our focus is on you and our residents. We were founded right here in Wichita by a local Baptist Minister and members of a Baptist congregation over 50 years ago.
