There’s nothing quite like celebrating Independence Day with family, friends, neighbors, and a little red, white, and blue community fun! Prairie Homestead Senior Living is excited to invite you to our 8th Annual Fourth of July Parade on Saturday, July 4, 2026.

Whether you want to walk, ride, or scoot, this parade is a wonderful way to come together, celebrate our country, and make lasting memories with the Prairie Homestead community.

Parade Details
Our Fourth of July Parade has become a special tradition, and this year we’re excited to make it even more memorable. Parade line-up will begin at 9:15 a.m., followed by the Opening Ceremony at 10:00 a.m.

This year’s parade will include a Ford tractor, and young children will have the opportunity to ride on the trailer pulled by the tractor. Children who would like to participate will need to be signed up ahead of time, and a consent form must be signed by a parent or guardian.

We’re also excited to share that our new bus will be driving in the parade! Anyone interested in riding the bus should let Stacy know by calling 316-239-7160.

How to Sign Up
Sign-up sheets to participate in the parade are available in the Snack Shack. Please be sure to sign up before the deadline of July 2nd so we can plan accordingly.

Whether you plan to walk, ride, scoot, wave, cheer, or simply enjoy the day with loved ones, we would love to have you join us.

Special T-Shirt Sale
To help everyone get into the patriotic spirit, Prairie Homestead 4th of July Parade T-shirts are half off this year! You can grab yours for only $5 in the Little Gift Shop on the Prairie. It’s a fun and affordable way to show your Prairie Homestead pride during the parade.

Bring Your Family and FriendsThis celebration is open to families, friends, residents, and the greater Prairie Homestead community. Bring your loved ones, invite your friends, and help us make this Fourth of July a day to remember.

Tips for Meaningful Conversations with Loved Ones | Prairie Homestead

One of the greatest gifts we can give the people we love is our attention. In a world filled with busy schedules, endless notifications, and constant distractions, meaningful conversations have become more valuable than ever — especially between generations of family and close friends.

At Prairie Homestead Senior Living, we believe strong relationships are built through connection, listening, and shared moments. Whether you’re speaking with adult children, grandchildren, lifelong friends, or fellow residents, thoughtful conversation has the power to strengthen emotional well-being and deepen relationships at every stage of life.

Why Meaningful Conversations Matter
As we age, connection becomes increasingly important for emotional and mental health. Genuine conversations can:
  • Reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation
  • Improve emotional wellness
  • Strengthen family bonds
  • Encourage understanding between generations
  • Create lasting memories and shared stories
Often, it’s not the “big” conversations that matter most. Simple moments — talking over coffee, sharing old memories, or asking thoughtful questions — can become the moments people remember forever.

Tips for More Meaningful Conversations
1. Listen to Understand, Not Just Respond

One of the most powerful ways to connect is through active listening. Instead of thinking about what to say next, focus fully on the other person’s words, emotions, and experiences. Feeling heard creates trust and closeness.

2. Ask Open-Ended Questions
Questions that require more than a “yes” or “no” answer often lead to richer conversations. Try questions like:
  • “What was one of your happiest memories growing up?”
  • “What’s something you’ve always wanted to learn?”
  • “What are you most proud of?”
These types of questions invite storytelling, reflection, and deeper connection.

3. Put Away Distractions
Meaningful conversations happen best when people feel fully present. Turning off the television, setting down phones, and making eye contact can completely change the tone of a conversation.

4. Share Stories and Memories
Stories help families preserve history and strengthen bonds between generations. Seniors carry incredible wisdom and experiences that younger family members often treasure hearing later in life.
At Prairie Homestead, we regularly see how sharing memories can spark laughter, comfort, and unexpected connection among residents and families alike.

5. Don’t Avoid Difficult Topics
Not every meaningful conversation is lighthearted. Sometimes discussions about health, aging, fears, or future plans are necessary. Approaching these conversations with compassion, patience, and honesty can help families feel more supported and connected during life transitions.

6. Make Conversation a Regular Habit
Connection grows through consistency. A short daily phone call, weekly visit, or shared meal can strengthen relationships over time far more than occasional “big” conversations.
